I want a gantry type machine

I would like to build a gantry type milling machine.

I would like to do ice carvings.

Please if you can steer in me in the right direction please do so.

I am interested in making something like this. Just double the size.

I would look at the different logs on this site and determine which best suits your needs.

I guess mdf is out for ice.

    happy reading

Well some use a MDF table and MOST use a UHMW table..

I want to go with the UHMW table...

So where do I get the parts? I want to go with Servo motors. Is there any blueprints on these things?

A good approach for "bolt together" machines is aluminum extrusion -- look for various 8020 builds on this site. I sell a set of parts for use in building machines from extrusion. Alternatively, you could go for a kit from Joe -- see the various machines in the Joes2006 forum. Hope that's helpful.

I don't need a "bolt together" machine. I have a welder and access to a machine shop.

Then you are well ahead of many on this site. Again, if you take some time and read the post for various machines you should be able to get an idea of what is currently being done. Since you can weld, look at other builds using steel frames.

If you come back with specific questions after doing some initial reading on your own, you will probably get more helpful answers.

I have an idea on the machine and how I want it designed.

The problem/question I can't figure out is how to get the linear ways going. How to set them up and what not.

What are the types of ways you can get?
