Staying Connected
You know its frustrating how Tormach has made a big deal about how you can save so much time if you abandon your sneaker net and use WiFi to transfer files to the machine. I was perfectly fine with Sneaker Net.
I have to use it on all my Windows machines anyway to keep them air gapped from the Internet and Black Ice. I don't want to run resource leaching security suites on my older machines with now unsupported operating systems, and I need to protect them from hostile code that now attacks on all fronts. W7 Pro 64bit seems to be the Holy Grail for running Mach 3 with a Smooth Stepper.
Anyway, I gave in to the pressure campaign and decided to run WiFi on the new 1100S3 controller I bought from Tormach for my (6-7 year old) 1100S3. The thing is I can't get it to stay connected to save my life. I've easily spent 100-200 times more time trying to connect and reconnect and connect again than I would have to put the damned code file on a thumb drive and walk back to the mill. IN FACT I have walked back to the mill several more times than I would have if I had just put the damn code on a thumb drive and walked it back to the machine.
WiFi signal strength? No. its always over 80 according to the PathPilot network interface. Intermittent. No I can literally place my phone connected to the same WiFi network UNDER the new computer and get the same speed test throughput as I get with the phone inches from the WLAN transceiver.
Connect to the internet only worked when using automatic DHCP. Connect from my CAD/CAM PC only worked with manually assigned IP. Consist connection? Spotty at best.
HOW IN THE PHYUCK IS THIS THING SUPPOSED TO WORK RELIABLY?
I have no issues connecting any other device to either my LAN or WLAN. Printers, phones, laptops, tablets. NO PROBLEM.
