    schurabufu,

I tried double back tape and it was ok...not great. How to do you all hold down small pieces. Can you give me some suggestions on bit speed, feed, etc. When you are just cutting out outlines can't you just use a smaller bit like 1/8" even if the board is thicker?

Any help would be great as I really want to cut these things out. I only tried once and can use some help.

    Thanks- you guys are great!!

    SMALL PIECES

I am currently carving the Paradise Box by VCarve Pro out of MDF 1/2 inch thick board.
I am using double sided tape, two pieces thick (about 1/8 inch thick total)
On a board 12 inches by 5 inches I anchor the board at 8 points (four corners the middle and one each in the centre of the square that is formed)
On a 14 inch square board I would use about ten pieces of tape, the double sided tape is the thick tape DO NOT use the thin stuff. The more pieces of tape you use the less movement there will be, experiment. Obviously MDF is a softer timber and a very sharp toolbit helps, as yet I have not tried harder timber.
    Regards
    Eric

Converting a pdf to a engraving file

After messing about with this project for a goodly time now I sure could use some help with what I'm trying to do. I volunteered to make some plaques for a club rifle shoot and while the text is easy to do I cannot convert the symbol of the club to insert into the plaques.

The .pdf file attached contains two pages of junk to my needs and the symbol I'm needing is in the upper right corner of the page and it says Capitol City Rifle and Pistol Club.

Would someone knowelable than myself see it's possible to get this to a file I can use for my plaques. I'm starting to get desperate now as the time closes in!!

    Thanks,

    Lee

    Thanks Bob,

At last I can see the image and start working on it now in Vcarve pro. I have an issue of of open vectors and duplicate vectors to deal with. Something I have been able to overcome in the past so the cut file is missing some of the detail but now hopefully with the manual and searching I can get it all connected together and working.

What process did you use to get it to this state?

I am just really enjoying using my cnc router and have been able to do some relatively simple tasks so far but each I succeed with this I'm learning. With your and others help it's made the learning curve a little shorter and in this case I really needed to get moving on this project.

    Thanks again,

    Lee

    Lee,

That was just a quick vector conversion using CorelDraw and exporting it as a DXF.

I just did a quick bitmap-to-vector conversion using CorelDraw then exported the vector as a DXF.

Thanks for the info on the file. I've managed to get the file to the generate gcode state but found that it was way to busy to engrave, to many tiny lines. I cleaned it a bit more and will give it a try again tomorrow. What a learning curve this has!!

    Regards,

    Lee

Here is a another one you can try out to see if you can use.
    Good luck.

Very good trace bobsch, just wondering, when you save it, do you save it as "lines and arcs" or "polylines" ?

Unfortunately Draw doesn't give you an option, except for text. Draw isn't perfect, but it's what I've got.
