Easier permission for electrolysers

The Federal Cabinet has recently passed an amending ordinance to adapt the Fourth Federal Immission Control Ordinance. With this, the German government wants to create the conditions for quicker and simpler approvals of electrolysers for hydrogen production. The European Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) already regulates over 13,000 installations in Germany. Among other things, the amendment focuses on the transformation towards a climate-neutral, clean and circular industry. This also means that in future, the production of hydrogen by electrolysis will only be subject to a European approval procedure if the hydrogen production capacity exceeds 50 tons per day. Until now, approval under European law was required for all electrolysers on an industrial scale.
