eFuels: indispensable for climate protection
eFuels based on renewable energy are decisive drivers of a comprehensive defossilization of the traffic and transport sector and therefore indispensable components for a comprehensive and rapid climate protection. This is what VDMA AG Power-to-X for Applications recently expressed in a press release at the launch event of the German Center for Future Mobility (DZM) on August 23 in Munich.
Liquid and gaseous fuels will continue to be needed in the future, especially in aviation, shipping and road freight transport, as well as in agricultural engineering and for construction machinery. eFuels produced on the basis of green hydrogen enable CO2-neutral applications in these segments.
"We welcome the funding programs with which the German government is promoting the supply side," says Peter Müller-Baum, Managing Director of the VDMA AG Power-to-X for Applications. "On the other hand, however, the demand side must also be stimulated in order to initiate the necessary market ramp-up. This can only be achieved through appropriate regulation." Keywords here are a significant CO2 price, or, for example, the possibility of crediting within the framework of CO2 fleet limits - so Brussels legislation in particular is called for. "The sooner there is clarity here, the better for the development of a market," Müller-Baum continued.
In the press release, VDMA had once again pointed out the need for technological openness to achieve the climate targets and appealed to the German government to push for appropriate framework conditions in Brussels. The regulation of CO2 fleet limits within the framework of the EU's Fit for 55 pact is of decisive importance in this context, as the legislator has so far pursued the so-called end-of-pipe approach: CO2 emissions are assessed exclusively "at the tailpipe", holistic approaches are thus excluded, CO2 neutral fuels are thus not accepted. Proposals for the accounting of eFuels have been available for a long time, but have been ignored by politicians. Find the original press release (German language) here.
