P2X in operation: Less CO2 on the high seas with SNG
Power-to-X is gaining more and more ground in politics, economy, society and also in the media. And, Power-to-X is arriving more and more in practice. Here is another example: Less CO2 on the high seas with SNG
The container ship ElbBLUE, known until a few years ago as the "Wes Amelie," already caused a stir in 2017 when it became the first of its kind in the world to be converted to dual-fuel operation. MAN propulsion specialists replaced almost all components of the combustion chamber for this purpose, and a 500-cubic-meter tank for liquefied natural gas was installed in the forecastle.
Now the ElbBLUE took the next step. She took synthetic natural gas (SNG) as fuel, green SNG was thus used for the first time ever in commercial shipping. The ElbBLUE bunkered around 20 tons of the climate-neutral fuel, which was produced 100% from renewable energy sources, for this first voyage in Brunsbüttel Ports' Elbe harbor. The liquefied SNG is produced at a power-to-gas plant near Cloppenburg.
