Hydrogen demand: forecast by the NWR

In 2023, the National Hydrogen Council (NWR) published an initial hydrogen demand analysis, which the body has recently revised.
In the basic paper "Greenhouse gas savings and the associated hydrogen demand in Germany" from February 2023, the National Hydrogen Council (NWR) published an initial demand analysis, which provided estimates for the central sectors of steel production, the chemical industry, mobility and, with restrictions, heating. In May 2024, the committee revised the paper. For 2030, the NWR now expects strong demand for hydrogen from the steel industry and heavy goods vehicles. The requirements of all sectors are estimated at approx. 94-125 TWh for 2030. The basic paper also analyzes the expected demand in 2035, 2040 and 2045.
With the adoption of the National Hydrogen Strategy, the German government appointed the National Hydrogen Council in June 2020. The Council consists of 26 high-ranking experts from industry, science and civil society who are not part of the public administration. The task of the NWR is to advise and support the State Secretaries' Committee for Hydrogen with proposals and recommendations for action in the implementation and further development of the hydrogen strategy.
