Harnessing market forces
Clear words from VDMA President Karl Haeusgen: Anyone calling for a ban on internal combustion engines is above all showing a lack of imagination. In an interview with "energie und Mittelstand" issue 3/2021, Haeusgen explains that many billions of euros will have to be spent to build a hydrogen economy, on the one hand by industry investing in new technologies and business areas, and on the other by the state, for example in infrastructure development.According to Haeusgen, there are political forces that portray hydrogen as a rare, expensive commodity that should only be used where it is essential. If politicians followed this view, the result would indeed be that hydrogen would remain rare and thus expensive. That would be fatal, because it is ultimately indispensable in all sectors to achieve our climate targets.
For hydrogen to be produced on a large industrial scale, it is a matter of exploiting all potential and creating incentives, especially in those sectors that have a comparatively high willingness to pay. In concrete terms, if the automotive industry were allowed to invest in eFuels to achieve climate targets and thus avoid high penalties, synthetic drop-in fuels would be conceivable at the filling station without you necessarily feeling it as a motorist.
